As a result of recent cuts to the HSE public dental service , children will now have their FIRST dental examination at their local HSE clinic during 6th class .   While there are lots of demands on finances for child care , a childs dental health should be high on your list of priorities , and your children will thank you with a great smile !

For most parents, a child’s oral health is one of the most important things to get right and getting an infant into a good routine can often prove difficult. Regular dental exams, whilst they are still young, will help protect your kid’s teeth and prevent future dental problems as well as get them into good habits that should sustain them throughout life.

It is always better to treat any dental problems early on and, at Martin’s Lane Dental Centre ,we understand that getting children familiarised with visiting the dentist is often half the battle.

As a rule of thumb, your child’s first visit to the dentist should around their first birthday. After 5 years of age, kids should then start having regular, 6 monthly check-ups.

At Martins Lane Dental , we provide a pleasant and children friendly environment that will take the stress out of a visit to the dentist. We offer a free dental check up for 0 to three year olds and we  are currently offering a  special rate of 20 euro for older children.

What to expect from your first visit to Martin’s Lane Dental Centre

When you visit our practice in Mullingar, , we will try to give you as much information about your child’s dental health as possible.

Dental health is not just about teeth, though that’s why we are here. It is also affected by diet and having good eating habits will make sure your child doesn’t encounter problems as they grow.

We’ll talk you through how to care for a toddler’s mouth and the role fluoride plays.

Children go through a number of defined stages as they develop, such as teething and the growth of milk teeth. We will explain how to reduce bad oral habits like thumb sucking and ways to avoid accidents that can harm the teeth.

Cleaning your child’s teeth, especially early on, can be quite difficult , so we will give you a chance to practice and give you specific advice on hygiene and what toothpastes are best to use.

On your first visit, we will run you through how your child’s teeth are likely to develop over the years and what to look out for and suggest a follow up schedule of care.

Our dentist may well clean your child’s teeth on your first visit, particularly if there are stains that are common with infants. They may also apply fluoride if they think your child is at a greater risk of cavities.

Your first visit to the dentist can be challenging, for the child and for the parent, so we try to make it as comforting and welcoming as possible. At Martins Lane Dental, we believe that being informed is a big part in maintaining good oral hygiene. From your first dental exam, we aim to provide a child friendly environment that will help you prevent future dental problems and give your child the bright, shining smile they deserve.
